Taste Palette
Taste Palette is a community initiative revolving around food and the memories it evokes. Our idea was simple: food can hold stories, stir memories of home, and be a medium of connection. We are from Hong Kong, and we invited our Hong Kong community to share our stories and celebrate our identity through food reminiscent of our homeland. By sharing this food, we also aimed to connect with the wider community that we now call home.
We ran five food and illustration workshops between October and December 2025. For each workshop, we collaborated with a locally based Hong Kong food business to showcase a distinct aspect of Hong Kong’s diverse food culture. This ranged from drinks like Cha Chaan Teng lemon tea to baked goods like the famous HK-style egg tarts. These foods served as the starting point for conversation and creativity. By combining art-making and storytelling with food tasting, the workshops encouraged participants to slow down, reflect, and connect through shared sensory experiences.
This zine is a compilation of illustrations and stories from the five workshops. They reflect the richness of Hong Kong cuisine and how it embraces and adapts international cultures into the daily life of HKers, as well as the similarities it shares with other cultural palates. This zine is also an invitation to remember, to share, and to support the small businesses and stories that keep these flavours alive.
